Dart River Braided River Lake Wakatipu is an original acrylic painting by New Zealand artist Joan Edridge, depicting the Dart River Mouth, where it enters Lake Wakatipu, at the far end of the lake from Queenstown, New Zealand. The braided river systems seen in New Zealand are rare world-wide, only observed in a handful of other countries around the world, namely Alaska, Canada, and the Himalayas (India/Nepal/Tibet). They are characterized by wide, gravelly beds with multiple shifting channels due to high sediment loads from young eroding mountains. Braided rivers are very special habitats with plant and animal communities that are found nowhere else in the world (DOC and Meridian Energy field guide https://www.doc.govt.nz).

It was a reference photo taken by @chanceallred that attracted me to this view. He kindly gave his permission for me to use it in this painting. I believe the photo was taken whilst on a helicopter trip in this unforgettable region.

This striking artwork shows off an unusually comprehensive view of the braided river mouth, where the Dart River enters Lake Wakatipu at the northern end near Glenorchy. The headwaters of the Dart River begin life in the Southern Alps and the Dart Glacier and it flows south-west and then south into the lake.

Joan has used delicate brushwork to illustrate the fine ribbons of the river and the detailed mountains in the background, giving viewers a unique glimpse of this rare landscape.
